A year later…

July 23, 2010

I have no idea if anyone reads this blog or not.  Just in case someone occassionally checks in, I thought I’d do an unpdate.  In reality, I should use this blog regularly and maybe I’ll begin doing so again.  About the time I stopped posting on this blog, I started a photography website with an accompanying blog and began posting there:  www.joslynsmithphotography.com / http://joslynsmithphotography.wordpress.com

But, I only post my photographs there.  That’s fine but, in truth, my other art is more important to and reflective of who I am and the growth that I’m expeirencing in my life.  I anticipate the next two or so years to be especially interesting and exciting for me and I think that continuing using my art as a key form of expression is going to be increasingly important.  So, I think I’ll try to use this site to document those things and my journey in general – maybe making it a little more general than just my art.  Maybe I’ll try to share more of my story.  I’m not really sure.  For now, to get back into the swing of things here, I’ll share a watercolor that I did about two weeks ago.  It remains untitled for now, but I’m sure that will eventually change.

New Website!

September 9, 2009

After several years of wanting to set up a website for my photography, I’ve finally done it!  What better time than when I first move to a new place, right?  I’m hoping to eventually be able to do part-time photography work around Ithaca and this is the first step:  www.joslynsmithphotography.com

Reclamation

“Reclamation”… the title of my latest piece. I rarely title my art but this one is very personal for me and speaks to the process I’m moving through at this point in my life.

Crocheting

July 5, 2009

I wrote a while back that I’d learned to crochet but haven’t posted any pics yet for some reason.  I just finished my fourth blanket since learning in March.  This one is for Anna who will turn one on July 13 (I have no idea how she’s that old already).  After I finished it, I decided I would do a mini version for her doll, Bernadette… or a travel-size one for Anna (whichever way she prefers to use it).    So you can get a visual, here is a (old) pic of Anna (with Bernadette, of course).

Have you ever seen such amazing eyes?

Lots of thoughts today…

June 14, 2009

I’ve done two watercolors today.  The first I did tonight after a good afternoon/evening that helped me think more about the concept of forgiveness…

And this is a smaller one that I did earlier in the day.  I’m calling her ‘Claudine.’  I don’t know anyone named Claudine but that’s what came to me as I finished the piece, so I’m keeping it…

Catching Up

May 23, 2009

I had a brief unexpected detour in my life and had to take some time to tend to myself and my health for a bit in New York.  Because of that, I haven’t had the opportunity to post anything since February… much too long ago.  I have so much to catch up on here.  My brother got married and I photographed the Tucson wedding.  While I was in Arizona, I did a photo shoot with my friend Holli and her family (husband Brad and daughter Anna).  It was wonderful to meet Anna Jean for the first time and to photograph and fall in love with her in person, rather than via her MeMe, Mary Ellen!  It was fun for me too because I photographed her parents’ wedding in San Diego almost three years ago…

I’ve also begun watercoloring over the past month or so.  It’s been an interesting transition for me.  Anytime I’ve painted before, I plan out everything before I begin…  I conceptualize what I want to paint, then sketch it out, perfect the sketch, then transfer it onto the canvas, and eventually get around to doing a painting.  With the watercolors, I’m being much more spontaneous and I’ve been suprised at what comes to me when I just start putting the brush to the paper without really thinking about it.  While I was in NY, I also picked up crocheting.  I’m currently working on my fourth blanket and find that working with the yarn really relaxes me.  I’m thankful for having learned that during this stage of my life.

So, this is a probably too-long post to share some of what I’ve done over the past few months.  I am in the midst of several life changes that are exciting and scary and lots of other things all at once.  My hope is that I will use this space to write more about all that I’m transitioning toward as those things begin to happen and to share the art that I create as I move through these new motions….

I’ll start from the most recent “creativity” and work backwards…

Here are a few of my favorites of Anna and her parents Holli and Brad (if I posted all of the ones I’d like to, we’d be here for hours):

And, finally, after three months… a few pics from Clay and Erin’s wedding on February 21, 2009.  Welcome to the family, Erin!

Refuge

February 17, 2009

This week, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some time resting, relaxing, and remembering that it’s important to take care of myself. I’ve been in New York at Ophelia’s Place and decided to do some paintings for them to sell in their store. While I thought I would get three canvases and some journal covers painted, I only got two finished. It’s been so nice to just paint for a couple of days. Here’s what I created:
